iPod Nano
September 8th, 2005

Ipod Nano – this thing is really, really, tiny. Its even smaller than it seems on the Apple site. Totally weightless, it feels like you could easily forget it in your pocket and send it through the wash.
They were practically flying off the shelves at the Apple Store, but luckily I had a buddy there who held one for me. Sound quality is great, similar to other iPod models, though it seems like it can go a bit higher in overall volume.

The flash memory results in lightning fast operation. For instance, when browsing through photos there is almost zero lag while scrolling quickly through full-screen photos.
iCal, Addressbook Contacts, and Stopwatch are standard in addition to the iPod usuals, such as games, notes and clock. There is also a screen lock function, so that you can really piss off any jackass who steals your Nano.
The brightness and resolution of the small screen is surprisingly crisp and just right for the size of the interface. Form and fit is similar to 4G click-wheel iPods (i.e. a 9 out of 10 vs. a 10 for the 3G), leaving this little thing a bargain for the money. A noticeable design configuration is that the headphone minijack is at the bottom, rather than on the top like other iPod models. This makes more sense when you combine the Nano with the optional accessories like the lanyard headphones. This thing is the perfect compliment in portability to a Powerbook G4, though it is supposedly not supported by a photo storage device yet.
4GB iPod Nano is $249 from Apple or $229 with the Education Discount.
2GB version is $199 or $179, respectively. Either version comes in white or black.

The nearest Apple Store is in Singapore, other than that, I think that mail order is the only way to go in the PI.
